Tooth Exractions in West Jordan

get your tooth pulled with our West Jordan dentistIf a patient has a tooth that is too damaged to be treated with root canal therapy, Dr. David Powell will provide tooth extraction in West Jordan, Utah. Tooth removal will preserve the health of the surrounding teeth and restore the function of your smile.

Tooth extraction is the removal of a damaged tooth. While we strive to avoid the need to remove a tooth whenever possible, certain conditions may make tooth extraction the most effective option for returning your smile to proper health and function.

Several conditions may necessitate having a tooth pulled, including:

Severe infection that has destroyed a significant portion of the tooth and supporting bone structure
Serious decay that has damaged a tooth beyond repair, rendering a successful restoration impossible

To avoid complications like a weakened chewing ability, jaw pain, and shifting teeth, Dr. Powell may recommend tooth removal.

The Tooth Removal Process

West Jordan dentist, Dr. Powell, will numb your tooth, jawbone, and gums with a local anesthetic. He will gently slide the tooth back and forth until it comes out with ease.

You will feel pressure during a tooth extraction, but not pain. If you experience any pain while having your tooth pulled, please let us know and we will make your procedure more comfortable straight away.

Bleeding | You may notice some bleeding after having your tooth pulled. Place a piece of moist gauze over the tooth socket and bite down firmly for 30 minutes to an hour.
Blood clots | Blood clots are one of the risks associated with tooth removal, but can be avoided. Avoid rinsing or spitting for 24 hours after your tooth extraction, and avoid using a straw, smoking, or consuming hot liquids for a few days.
Swelling | If swelling occurs, you can place a cold compress or ice on the face.
Eating | After your tooth extraction, do not chew on the extraction site. Avoid hot liquids and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours. Some patients should stick to a liquid diet for 24 hours post procedure, if recommended by Dr. Powell.
Cleaning | Avoid brushing near the extraction site for one day. After 24 hours, resume gentle cleaning.

Dr. David Powell will provide you everything you need for a comfortable recovery. He may recommend over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to keep you pain-free while you heal.
