Preventing Tooth Decay

Preventing Tooth Decay in UtahTooth decay is one of the most pervasive issues we dentists face. At Jordan Landing Smiles in West Jordan, we help all our patients prevent cavities and maintain good dental health.

Blame it on Bacteria

Tooth decay is caused by bacteria. Bacteria live in your mouth and combine with plaque and acids to erode the enamel coating on your teeth. The breakdown of your tooth enamel can often bring about the development of small holes in your teeth which are known as cavities.

Every time you eat something, the bacteria already in your mouth produces acid. That means the more often you eat, the more times your teeth are exposed to it.

Lifestyle Factors

Tooth decay is typically a result of diet and oral hygiene choices. When sticky foods are consumed and allowed to sit on the teeth, or foods full of sugars and starches are eaten throughout the day, decay can begin.

Of course, you need to eat. The trick is choosing foods wisely, and keeping your teeth clean. Foods to avoid include soda and sugary chewing gum; these foods tend to create an environment where bacteria prosper.

To help prevent tooth decay, simply limit sugary and starchy foods between meals. Brushing after every meal is big help. You should floss eat least once a day, too. It’s a good idea to carry small inter-dental cleaners (never toothpicks, though) to clean between your teeth while you’re out and about.

At Jordan Landing Smiles, we want the best possible dental health for all our patients. Our services include general and restorative dentistry. Schedule your next checkup today!
